Hello and welcome to a brand new season of Relay For Life of Second Life!
We are excited to enter this season with a fresh outlook on relaying!
This year, the primary goal of Relay is to support each other. We’re not just relaying to raise money for a cure! We’re relaying in support of our families, friends, colleagues and more!
The very people who cared for us when we faced cancer (if you are a survivor). The very people we support and cared for (caregivers)! The friends and colleagues that have cancer now! People who are feeling like they are drowning in a sea of information and uncertainty. These are reasons to relay. So, do you know someone who has cancer now? Do you know someone who had cancer? Did you care for someone with cancer? I bet you have done at least one of these things, if not all.
This year alone, there is a projected estimate of 1.7 million new cancer cases and 606,880 cancer deaths. That is 3 new cases and one death every minute. This is a staggering statistic. Every minute, three new people are hearing those devastating words, “You have cancer.” Every minute a family is losing a loved one to the cancer monster.
This is where Relay For Life comes into play. This is why we relay! We all relay for our own reasons. Whether it is to give back to our friends and family or it’s to support our loved ones suffering right now. Or it’s just to raise funds for cancer research. Every new dollar helps pay for a program that provides support to a cancer patient and their family.
Some of the vital programs that you are helping to support by donating:
Hope Lodge is a place where patients and their families can stay while going through treatment free of charge. It is hard enough going through treatments without having to worry about how you’re going to get to your treatments or where you’ll stay while going through your treatments. Hope Lodge was created for this reason.
To find a Hope Lodge in your area, call 1-800-227-2345.
Reach to Recovery
Reach to Recovery is a program providing face-to-face visits or personal phone calls supporting cancer patients. They are trained volunteers who provide support and up-to-date information about cancer, including literature for spouses, partners, children, friends and other loved ones. They review American Cancer Society resources in an effort to help with a patient’s concerns and questions.
To get matched with a Reach to Recovery volunteer, call 1-800-227-2345.
Road to Recovery
Every day cancer patients make the choice of getting to treatment or staying home due to lack of funds or transportation. No one should have to make this choice. The Road to Recovery program helps patients get to their needed treatments. Depending on your eligibility, the ACS will provide a volunteer to help you get to your treatments. Some restrictions may apply such as the need must be for cancer-related medical treatments.
To set up a ride, call well in advance of your appointment, at 1-800-227-2345.
To volunteer for any of the programs available through the ACS, fill out this form: https://www.cancer.org/involved/volunteer/sign-up-to-volunteer.html.
These are just a few cancer support programs available through the funds raised by Relay For Life every year. Other uses for the funds include research and support to other Cancer Societies throughout the world.
We, UFS Metamorphosis, welcome you to join us in our fight against cancer! We urge you to join us at events through the season and help support your fellow UFS members (and others in the Sci-Fi community and beyond) fight against cancer! We join together to CELEBRATE, REMEMBER, FIGHT BACK!
