| The eldest daughter of a diplomat and an aspiring writer, April Samantha Coswell grew up playing roller hockey in the streets of Montreal, on planet Earth.
When she was six, her uncle, Commander David Coswell, was killed in the line of duty during the Battle of Wolf 359. Upon hearing the news, Commander Coswell’s twin brother Bruce - April's father - fell into a deep depression and took an extended leave from his work in the Federation Diplomatic Corps. Even though he resumed his duties in 2370, it was clear that he was unable to stop blaming himself for his brother's death. Although he was able to function professionally, by the time April was 12, Bruce Coswell’s increasing drinking problem had destroyed his marriage. At home, April became the de facto caretaker for both her father and her seven-year-old sister Alyson. After five years however, she was desperate to escape a situation that was quickly becoming unbearable. 2378 saw a 17-year-old April Coswell board the Tellarian ship Kraxto, bound for the Denari system. She spent three years living in a kibbutz community on Denari IV, an experience she doesn't evoke often, other than to say that there she "learned to work with my hands instead of my brain, and that allowed me to learn how to work with my soul." In 2381, April returned to Earth upon hearing that her sister had run away from home and that her father had taken another leave of absence from the Diplomatic Corps. She spent the next three years completing a degree in sociology at UC Santa Cruz while attempting once again to reunite her family. It was there that she met her partner Varden Paine, a music major who finally convinced her that for her own health, she needed to "save herself before saving the world." She heeded his advice and, after graduating in 2384, she boarded a ship bound for the Khitomer wormhole and the Delta Quadrant, where she enlisted in Starfleet Academy at Pinastri. Endowed with a quirky sense of humour and a slight penchant for the outrageous, April Coswell takes pride in the fact that she inherited her father's "crazy gene" as she calls it. She loves loud music (preferably Klingon metal), her tae-bo workouts and her occasional glass of merlot. This side of her is tempered, however, by a deep spiritual fabric. She herself admits that she chose Starfleet because she's seeking something, but doesn't know what that "something" is. | |||||
