Introduction

Greetings and thank you for your interest in the United Federation Starfleet Intelligence Branch. We’re so glad you’re here! No, really we are. The Intelligence Branch has a variety of options. Here you will learn what it takes to be an Intelligence Officer within United Federation Starfleet. There are quite a few options within the branch, we will discuss them further in this manual. There are both metaverse and non-metaverse Roleplay options, non-rp positions, etc. There’s something for pretty much everyone.

There is not much known about the Intelligence Branch canonically within the Trek Universe. However, we have created and tapered the Intelligence branch within UFS based on Starfleet values. Such as the following quote from one of Starfleet’s most revered Captains:

"The first duty of every Starfleet officer is to the truth, whether it's scientific truth or historical truth or personal truth! It is the guiding principle on which Starfleet is based, and if you can't find it within yourself to stand up and tell the truth about what happened, you don't deserve to wear that uniform." Captain Jean-Luc Picard

Roleplay-wise Intel is rather unique. We are able to go on separate missions for our Commanding Officers, gather pertinent information, assist on away teams or specialize in deciphering codes. We can also be utilized as infiltrators and specialists, maximizing our abilities from when(if) we were in previous branches. Intelligence members are also able to work side-by-side with other branches or if needed work empty duty stations to fill a temporary gap. There will also be an Intelligence Branch roleplay that will focus on keeping our branch involved and active. Keeping active and taking classes at the Academy is also a great way to sharpen your knowledge for roleplaying purposes.

For members that do not partake in Roleplay as an activity, one option is to research and discuss things from what we deem the “Real World.” This could be topics such as: Anti-theft devices, Internet Security options, etc. This information could also carry over to our chats and roleplay in Second Life, Discord or even the Forums.

Another idea the non-metaverse member could do is search through the forums and find things that are of interest to the branch. Nothing “Classified/OOC” of course, but basic mission data compiling of mission logs or exploration notes. Some instances of this would be submitting info for the species or planetary indexes, or other mission related (approved) additions for the wiki or forums. These can then be presented to the Branch Commander as reports of fleet activity.

Another aspect of Intel is data gathering, this could be done with communication between an Intel officer and a Mission Coordinator to gather data regarding new species that have been encountered so that the Intelligent Species Index of UF Starfleet could be updated.

There are ideas in the works for both sides of the Intelligence Branch to keep everyone interested. Ideas are always welcome as well!

It also bears reminding that Section 31 might exist in the Star Trek television shows, but to us at UFS, it does not. We do not do “illegal/off the record” acts and blame it on Section 31. We are responsible for our actions whether in roleplay or as a RL member of the Intelligence Branch and as such need to strictly adhere to the rules and regulations of Starfleet. This means that we uphold our positions as Starfleet Officers and do our best to keep ourselves acting professionally and with dignity.

While the idea of being a spy or secret agent might be fun, we do need to remember that sometimes discretion is the best weapon. We are roleplaying Starfleet Officers, and not only need to remember the Prime Directive, but also the value of life. Taking a life should only ever be done as a LAST resort. Even if it is “just roleplay.”

We also do not have unlimited access or magic passes to any and every terminal and task. Intelligence Officers should be hardworking and dedicated to their tasks, dedicated only to finding the truth and solving any issues with discretion and professionalism.

Intelligence Officers should be knowledgeable in defensive tactics, piloting, basic medical and other general knowledge that will be outlined below. In some cases, knowledge and know-how will be the best tactic against our obstacles. Our missions do not always have “visible” enemies. Sometimes we just need to seek knowledge and truth. Discreetly.

Some of the dangers you will face as Intelligence Officer for UFS will be things such as discreetly infiltrating enemy territory, being captured by an opposing force, or you might find yourself on the receiving end of a Romulan Mind Probe. The more mundane dangers would be endless paperwork as we track, chart, decipher, or make new discoveries. The great thing about our branch, is you never know what we’re going to be doing day to day. However, we all have a part to play as members of this branch that’s full of new and exciting opportunities for all of our members.

Office Staff

Branch Commander

The Branch Commander is the head of the Intelligence Branch. Their job is to make sure the Intelligence Officers have ample opportunities, make sure that members' needs are met and are also meeting their expectations at their Duty Stations. They also make sure there are adequate roleplay opportunities, come up with group activities, reach out to members, and communicate with the Chief of Operations regularly.

The Branch Commander also holds Office Hours to have Intelligence branch members bring up any questions or issues they might have, or to speak to new recruits.

Vice Branch Commander

The Vice Branch Commander is a supporting role to the Branch Commander. Their job is to help the BC with Roleplay ideas, interact with the Intelligence Group, reaching out to ships and stations to make sure their Intelligence Officers are being used properly, or to assist the commanding officers with ideas to keep Intel members interested in Rp. 3. Roleplay Positions in UF Starfleet List all Official Roleplay Positions here with a description of each.

Positions in UF Starfleet Intelligence

Chief/Vice Intelligence Officer

This position is a Senior Staff position aboard a ship or station. The Chief Intelligence Officer reports to the Executive Officer and Commanding Officer on their ship/station. This role is very unique as they can use their skills to adapt where needed on the ship. Usually sent on away teams, or being deployed on missions to collect data, discreetly sabotage, or observe, infiltrate and report back to their CO. It bears remembering, that even though they are being sent on covert missions, they still must follow and abide by UF Starfleet rules and regulations. Our actions have consequences and as such, we need to be a good example even while “undercover.”

Ideally the Chief Intelligence Officer would have a specialty from before being promoted to department chief, and would be able to focus and hone those talents still in this role. It is their job to lead any intel officer on their team and be an exemplary example of a Starfleet Intelligence Officer.

Intelligence Analyst Specialist

Analyst is an important position for those who like to problem solve. There is usually coordination between Science or Communications officers to translate imperative information for an ongoing or upcoming mission from deciphering codes, researching historical data etc. Collecting data from pertinent sources such as data surveillance, computer files, personal accounts, etc is also a main role for an Intelligence Analyst Specialist. Another important job analysts have would be to compile any facts, motives, data etc and present any findings in a report to the Commanding Officer, or in extreme cases, in a diplomatic setting.

Infiltration Specialist

Infiltration Specialists are officers whose job it is to covertly sweep an area, or go on away missions to detect, discover, or scout a suspected area to discover or confirm any suspicious or illegal activities.

Field Operative

b) Recon. Covertly sweeping an area in order to discover the presence or non-presence of any suspected situation.

Intelligence Officer

An Intelligence Officer aboard a starfleet ship or station works closely with the other specialties, lending a hand where needed. They can also go as an extra hand on away teams or security detail. They should have a basic knowledge of security and medical.

Billet Requirements

Each role in the branch requires a certain amount of understanding of the area someone is assigned to. These roles are what we call “billets” and the following is the recommendations for each Billet.

The Intelligence department is responsible for gathering and providing intelligence as it becomes possible during a mission; during covert missions, the intelligence department also takes a more active role, providing the necessary classified and other information.
