Biography
On August 3, 2375, the girl was found, alone and naked on the deserted second moon of Palomar VI, by Ensigns Caravel, Benson and Nagatani. They were members of the extensive away team sent out by the USS Pharaoh to find the source of the mysterious but apparently harmless radiations emanating from that otherwise unremarkable place. The girl happily guided the away teams to every place of remote interest, and helped them determine that the radiations were a property of the planet. After collecting a variety of samples, the Pharaoh returned to Starbase 136, a scientific research station halfway between Bajor and Ferenginar. Natalya was named after Ensign Caravel, with whom she had become very friendly and affectionate.

For four years, Natalya was examined, tested and probed by a team of Starfleet scientists. She was classified as being a 10-year-old human, of both African/American and Native American lineage, even if no family could be found for her. Brown eyes, Kala Jeera (black-ish) hair, coffee coloured skin, O- blood type. She was a bit scrawny when she arrived, far from the slender girl, 2.00 meters tall and 79 kilograms, she is today. She looks as delicate as ever, but is stronger than she looks. Not the fastest runner in any bunch, but she compensates with an unheard of endurance.

Everything in Natalya was human, and yet there was something in her that, according to Dr. Emil Karu, head of the scientific team, did not compute. The girl, nicknamed "The Karu Project" by a Vulcan observer, had uncanny eyesight and the brains to match, and she spoke English without the help of a translator. Yet she had been found in perfect physical shape on a deserted moon that contained nothing to eat or drink, just a ball of rock and dust, and she had no memory whatsoever of anything preceding her first meeting with the three female ensigns. Dr. Karu was determined to solve the mystery and kept Natalya in a comfortable yet locked glass cage, submitting her daily to new analyses.

It was in 2379 that Natalya's life changed completely. Between the time she went to sleep and the time she woke up, Dr. Karu and his team left the base. That very same day, all the corridors were invaded by an army of Intelligence officers. Natalya was simply informed that Emil Karu had disappeared, and they were investigating to try to find out what could have happened to him and his team. She was sent to Deep Space Nine, where Dr. Julian Bashir, who by then had become the top exobiologist in the area, would examine the girl now simply known as "Natalya Karu". Bashir was just as puzzled as Karu but, after the girl had had a series of conversations with his wife Ezri, the station counsellor, he cleared her for civilian life. The Bashirs took care of her while she explored and made friends with everyone on the station. Natalya blossomed, both physically and psychologically. She discovered the other side of Starfleet, people who treated her as a person and not as some kind of sample. She learned to adapt to being in a group, although she felt awkward at anything but one-on-one conversations. She also spent countless hours alone in the arboretum, obviously enjoying solitude, which helped her sort her thoughts and ideas.

It's also on Deep Space Nine that Natalya found the one true enduring love of her life. Once, the Bashirs brought her with them to Earth to visit the O'Brien family and Starfleet Academy. Molly, their daughter, instantly "adopted" Natalya as her new big sister, and the two spent countless hours together. Molly made her visit the Callebaut kiosk in the Visitors Area, and there she discovered Belgian chocolates. Once back to Deep Space Nine, she brought some to Quark, promising him that he would make some latinum selling them. Quark, who really liked her — he called her her little plasma whip dancer, since she sometimes danced on a table to entertain his guests — agreed to try it, and made a bundle. To this day, Natalya still gets her Belgian chocolates from Quark, as her share of the profits. Quark gives the chocolates to one of his business relations, who happens to know a way for a runabout-sized ship to reach Pinastri in a few days, also carrying of course some other, not quite as legal, merchandise for other destinations.

At 15 Natalya's decision was taken. She would be a part of the wonderful organisation that had taken her from that barren world she had lived in. She studied, most of the time all by herself, to prepare for the entrance examination, but was told that she needed "official" academic records to be accepted. Yet there might be a way. Starfleet was getting ready to settle in the Delta Quadrant. Actually, a second convoy was ready to leave under Admiral Mike Calhoun. Lieutenant Caravel (now promoted) offered to take her to that new frontier where the Academy would not insist on official records as long as she showed readiness. Natalya accepted and left Deep Space Nine on Stardate 060601. Unfortunately, Lieutenant Caravel was killed during the Terran Empire Campaigns of 2382. Natalya cried for days, but made a solemn oath that she would succeed in her studies and replace the one she was now mourning as her "big sister". And so she did, graduating in 2385, Stardate 100706.

During her studies, Natalya had a bad experience at the Academy, about which she does not like to talk. Combined with her somehow bizarre first four years, it has left her a bit shy in certain circumstances, and has aggravated her awkwardness in communicating in groups. But she is working on it and can now teach at the Academy. Not quite the same thing as a conversation, but she still has made a lot of progress and plans to go on. Natalya longs for warmth, but keeps her distances, partly because of the "bad experience". And yet, due to that pre-Starfleet existence she cannot even remember, she sometimes longs for solitude. She will then be found mostly at the beach, sorting her thoughts or meditating on a new way to serve Starfleet. She does not mind being disturbed, but needs that time to herself. Finally, Natalya hates violence and rudeness. She feels that basic courtesy should be a given, and gives it freely, expecting to receive some in return. Sometimes disappointed she may be, but she will try again for as long as she feels necessary or useful. Then she will retreat into a polite silence. Her tastes are very antiquated: for instance, she loves Ludwig Van Beethoven's music above all, calling it "neurone stimulating".

Her professional objectives are simple: contribute to shape the future of Starfleet. That is why, after spending some time in the Intelligence Branch, she decided to apply for the Academy. And to this date, she is very happy to have made that choice.
