General

The UFS Diplomatic Corps is a component of UFS Command.

Created in 2379, the Diplomatic Corps combined all consular and diplomatic services of UFS Command into one administrative unit, tasked to uphold the best interest of the United Federation Starfleet.

Members of the UFS Diplomatic Corps are selected through a series of written and oral examinations. They serve at any of the federation diplomatic missions around the Delta Quadrant, including embassies, consulates, ships, and other facilities. Members of the Diplomatic Corps also staff the headquarters aboard the Space Station Tranquility. These members of the Diplomatic staff work to establish a foundation of trust between newly aquired contacts and the Federation, negotiating the terms of treaties and finalizing any law-binding documents therein.

UFS Diplomatic Corps Headquarters is located on the Space Station Tranquility, currently on the outskirts of the Pinastri System. The Diplomatic Corps contains an array of staff, and as such, encompasses its own internal rank structure, determined by position in the Corps. This runs alongside, and does not affect typical Starfleet rank.

Diplomatic Rank Structure

Aside from typical Starfleet rank and positions, such as Commanding Officer, Executive Officer, Yeoman, etc. The Diplomatic Corps also uses an internal structure which denotes the seniority of members, duties they perform and positions they may take.

- Ambassador (Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary)

An Ambassador is a diplomatic representative with plenipotentiary powers (i.e. full authority to represent the Commander in Chief). As they formally represent the Commander in Chief, they are entitled to use the title "His/Her Excellency".

- Envoy (Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary)

Usually just referred to as a Minister, an Envoy is a diplomatic representative with plenipotentiary powers (i.e. full authority to represent the head of state), but ranking below an Ambassador. As they formally represent the head of state, Envoys are also entitled to use the title "His/Her Excellency

- Minister (Resident)

this is the lowest rank of full chief of mission, above only chargé d'affaires (who are considered as substitutes or acting chiefs of mission).

- Chargé d'affaires

As the title (meaning "charged with affairs" in French) suggests, a chargé d'affaires is in charge of the affairs of a diplomatic mission in the usually temporary absence of a more senior diplomat. A chargé d'affaires ad interim or simply "a.i." is generally serving as chief of mission during the temporary absence of the head of mission, while the chargé d'affaires e.p. or en pied maintains the same functions and duties as an ambassador, and is accredited not to the Commander in Chief but to the foreign minister of the receiving state.

--Notes--

- Any diplomat who heads a diplomatic mission is known as chief of mission or head of mission. Chiefs of mission in nearly all cases hold the rank of Ambassador, Envoy, or Minister Resident.

- The term deputy chief of mission or deputy head of mission refers to the chief deputy to the chief of mission - the second-highest post at the diplomatic mission.

- Ambassadors are given the title "Ambassador"

- A diplomatic mission headed by an ambassador is known as an embassy.
