History
Port of call to the ships of the 3rd Fleet, SS Athena orbits Pinastri’s main star in geosynchronous orbit with Pinastri VII. Construction of this Regula-class station was completed in late 2382 on stardate 071130.
During the 2340's Starfleet decided to field two new variations of starbase. Both were based on the Regula-class design, but were scaled up to provide the room for enhanced capabilities and starship accommodation. Two types of bases were fielded, both had the same starship support functions, yet one was geared for deep space scientific research and the other for sector/system defence. Prior to 2382 virtually all were built as the scientific sub-type. SS Athena has since served both functions.
Crew Manifest
Construction and Initial Assignment
Its initial spec was the scientific sub-type as its sole purpose was to house the newly revamped UFS Academy. It served this function for a period of 12 months before the Academy was finally re-housed on SS Alexandria where it remains to this day. This change saw the station’s purpose redefined by UFS Command, and as a result underwent a refit and became the new headquarters of the UFS Marine Corps and their Air Group. The newly refitted facility was one of the first combat oriented Regula-class starbases in operation within the entire federation.
Compared to the scientific sub-type, the combat-orientated design has reduced scientific facilities and a reduced capability to handle civilian traffic. The refitted design is also more suited to operate largely within planetary systems, and as such lacks large bulk cargo and fuel containers. More space is given over to weaponry, with roughly double the previous armament. The shield generator is identical between the two stations, but the removal of the cargo containers means that this type's shields need to cover a significantly smaller volume, thereby increasing their overall strength.
Roleplay Premise
Whilst the station is primarily for system defence, it retains a scientific purpose and is tasked with researching and developing new offensive, defensive and intelligence technologies and warfare tactics. Its missions tend to revolve around reconnaissance, search and rescue, second wave exploration and of course deployment of marines where needed for ground based combat.
Athena Station also coordinates all UFS fleet wargames, giving all fleet commanders and ships captains the chance to hone their tactical skills so as to have as many options as possible in crisis situations.
