Mission #310: USS Milo #5: HAZMAT is a Dirty Word

USS Maxwell, NCC-21873, is a Nova-class science and survey vessel based out of Pinastri Colony on the Second Life Grid. We are currently a mission of exploration in the Hapke Cluster, an open star cluster of some 10,000 star systems. We are open to new crew! Please inquire with Captain Nora Gerhadsen or with Commander April Coswell. We are particularly interested in Science, Engineering and Operations officers.

Roleplay Times: Thursdays 6pm to 8pm SLT

Mission Name: USS Milo #5: HAZMAT is a Dirty Word

Story Concept: Nora Gerhadsen and Mina Landfall

The following information is IN CHARACTER information.

Location: Deep Space, enroute to Pinastri

Alert Status: green

USS Milo is currently towing the Saber-class light cruiser USS Varangian after that vessel had an unfortunate accident with a wayward quantum filament. The crew have all been returned to Pinastri already, and we are towing an empty ship. We are at Warp 5, and expect to arrive shortly. Systems are running well, though our notorious climate control system is malfunctioning again, and the temperature in the living spaces of the ship is 84.7 degrees Fahrenheit. It's not enough to be a panic, but it is hot enough to be uncomfortable bordering on miserable. Everyone's overheated and sweaty, and partial uniforms have been authorized given the conditions. Lucky for us, though, we're nearly back, and everyone's looking forward to getting out of this hot, stinky can and into the cool of a nice station.

OOC Notes:

- Welcome back to the USS Milo experiment! I hope we all have a blast with this.
--> if you haven't thought up a Milo character, just talk to me (Nora) and we'll come up with something.

* These duties are very general ideas, feel free to add to them and fill things in.

--> We are a tug. That means we're not exactly Starfleet's best and brightest, but we're not entirely nitwits either. In an emergency, folks *will* know their stations and their roles.

--> Otherwise, have a blast. This is not a straitlaced Starfleet Officer affair. Most are enlisted. Let your hair down. Brawl a little if you need to (but expect to get yelled at by the CO). This is Starfleet with all the grime that usually gets hidden.

* Please allow people to do their jobs and be thoughtful of the fact that people join departments and divisions to do their jobs. Try not to step on their functions. If you have something to help someone (advise that they may or may not follow) instead of saying something publically, it might be more useful to IM them and discuss it with them.

* Departments should be working together. There should be enough possibilities for everyone as long as they all work together and cooperatively. Do not be afraid to do OOC planning in IM.

* This is more or less freeform, but please don't have it as "Q did this". We need to get ourselves out of our own jams (not that this has ever been a problem with this crew).

Remember that the point of all this is to have fun! Good luck and have at!

Command Log:

Stardate: 210419

Location: Deep Space, enroute from Pinastri to the Fatima System (Midgar Sector)

Alert Status: green

USS Milo was in the process of towing the Saber-class light cruiser USS Varangian and was very close to Pinastri when we received orders to drop the tow near Pinastri for pickup by local tow vessels, and then immediately head to the Fatima System at best possible warp. After a mistaken early drop of the tow, USS Milo again grappled the Varangian and completed the tow to Pinastri, then immediately went to warp as ordered. We are currently on our way to the Fatima System.

Once we were at warp, crew were ordered to conduct simulations for different grapple scenarios for our next tow. The next tow is USS Aral Sea, a fuel tanker hauling a load of 100,000 tons of anti-deuterium. It has crashed-landed on Fatima III, which is the homeworld to a pre-warp culture. Our mission is to safely salvage USS Aral Sea and to avoid loss of containment. Needless to say, loss of containment on that tonnage of antimatter could spell disaster for the entire planet or even system. We will rendezvous with USS Fossey in the Fatima System; we will be under their supervision for the salvage. Fossey will take the lead in dealing with the local population and is responsible for Prime Directive concerns, though any Milo crew who go planetside must also be briefed on the Prime Directive. Accordingly, an impromptu Prime Directive briefing was held shortly after we went to warp.

The population of Fatima III is humanoid, with a culture that is described as 'Victorian.' This is expressed in the local architecture and apparel, and in the general level of technology. This planet was explored on or about Stardate 100725 by USS Sheppard, Captain Mulgrave Dwi commanding. Logs from the Sheppard indicate that the Fatima System is close to space occupied by a species called the Nabraithians. Logs from Sheppard and USS Maxwell indicate that this is a highly dangerous species. Any dealings with the Nabraithians are likewise the responsibility of USS Fossey. Our sole concern is the salvage and tow, though we will need to have some crew members detailed to dealing with the locals if that is required.

Obviously, non-humanoid crew will not be able to be reasonably made to look like the local species at Fatima III. Though all crew who have appropriate expertise and experience will be used on board USS Aral Sea for the salvage, humanoid crew will be required to wear clothing appropriate to the population of Fatima III and be prepared to peacefully engage the inhabitants, should it become necessary. Such contact is to be avoided if at all possible; the local clothing is merely a precaution.

Due to potential radiation issues arising due to the presence of antimatter, we will require a level 8 HAZMAT suite. Unfortunately, the equipment on the Milo has been used or expended. We will have to borrow Fossey's equipment when we get there. As a backup, crew were ordered to have their EVA suits modified for use in high-radiation environments. All personnel in potentially hazardous areas will be required to wear EVA suits.

In the meantime, we seem to have managed to repair, at some level, our malfunctioning climate control system. The fix does not seem entirely stable, but we're a lot better off than we were when we were originally ordered to Fatima III. The team that conducted the repair is not entirely sure how they got it to work, or what exactly they did to accomplish the fix. However, they apparently did something, and that something is keeping us from abject misery for now.
