The Toxic Empires of Egoligarchies

The word “oligarchy” comes from the Greek words oligos (few) and arkho (to rule or command). One definition of the word is “a small group of people having control of a country, organization, or institution.” An oligarch is a ruler in an oligarchy. William Shatner has created a new term – EGO + OLIGARCH = EGOligarch:

What is a EGOligarch? It’s someone who has some kind of following but isn’t necessarily widely known outside of a certain geographical or topical area but uses the fanbase they have to satisfy their egotistical needs to show and teach people that they are SOMEONE. That’s my loose definition. I’m trying not to be super critical but it’s hard not to be when you try and wrap your head around some of these types.

Mr. Shatner wrote an article on the Medium website about certain fans trying to become famous by scoring “coup” points against celebrities. He has become the target of some of those fans. He’s not happy about it, so he wants to educate us about what’s happening. And whats happening is not pretty.

In any type of fandom, there are those who try to shout louder than the rest, or try to rise above “the herd” and attract attention to themselves. In the process of doing that, they can create large amounts of drama, hate, and anger. 89-year-old William Shatner’s story of his abuse at the hands of these toxic fans is linked below.
