Creating Gene Roddenberry’s archives

Ahead of Gene Roddenberry’s 100th dedication birthday, the Roddenberry Estate has unveiled ‘The Roddenberry Archive’. The Estate has been working with OTOY, a US-based digital content creation company, for over a decade to digitally capture and preserve Gene Roddenberry’s legacy.

OTOY has cataloged and used key texts, documents, models and art from both on and off screen to digitally capture the world of Star Trek through Gene’s eyes. This work has taken over 30 years of research and the Archive continues to grow.

It doesn’t stop there; this is only the start for the Archive, their plans are ambitious, they expect to continue past the Original Series and onto other eras of Star Trek too, as well as its various spinoff series.

Creating a full-scale digital model of the USS Enterprise 1701

By using digital assets and Gene Roddenberry’s life’s work, the Archive has been able to create a 1:1 scale realistic model of the legendary ship, including areas that have never been seen or referenced before on screen. This means for the first time every space within the ship’s interior can be visualised in a logical and canonical layout.

Plans for an immersive holographic interactive model – a real life holodeck?

If it wasn’t enough just to create this 3D view, the pairing has announced it will be working with Light Field Lab to use the latest emerging holographic technology to put this model into the real world. Their ambition is to create a life-sized hologram, much like the holodecks of the Star Trek universe, for people to experience the starship like it’s never been seen before. Imagine walking around from room to room inside the Enterprise, making a quick visit to Engineering or skipping over to the brig. Experiencing and living Gene’s vision in the real world.

There are very exciting times ahead for every Star Trek fan out there. Combining records of the past with emerging technologies of the present to visualise the world of Star Trek like never before.
